In
Carlo Collodi’s original storybook, Pinocchio's natural curiosity is
presented as an obstacle to overcome in a journey to obeying society's
rules. For many, the story of Pinocchio imparts lessons about knowing
right from wrong, resisting temptation, and the price you pay if you
give in to foolish desires. In our retelling, however, society is itself
corrupt, and humanness a form of oppression. Through his struggle
between wood and human flesh, Pinocchio tries on human nature, with its
vagaries of greed, repression, ignorance, and the terror of living under
the authority of corrupt adults. We have reimagined ‘Pinocchio’ as a
blend of puppets and performers, with the intention that by revisiting
this classic story now, essential themes of human nature and rebellion
will reveal themselves anew.

two leaders of the collaborating organizations – Michael Haverty (The
Object Group) and Marium Khalid (Sky Creature Productions) are
co-writers, co-directers, and co-producers. The production begins this
December with a 30 minute film of chapters 1-8 of the story. The
production continues in August of 2022, with the release of the full
film and a live performance.

Todd HellsKitchenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17834486453292227593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32303337.post-49082818066802319142020-08-16T16:09:00.001-04:002020-08-16T16:42:41.493-04:00Juce Gace's Donkey Edition: A Wood Awakening

<span face="" style="color: white; font-family: "din next w01", sans-serif;">11.5" Limited Edition, 24 Hours Timed Released by Mighty Jaxx. On October 13, 1957 - 50 years ago today - NBC aired a live, nationally-televised production of Pinocchio featuring music composed by Alec Wilder. It is widely considered one of the classics from "the Golden Age of Television"
wilderworld recently asked Pinocchio lyricist William Engvick to share his recollections of the production. Here is some of what he related:
“I thought it was pretty good. The night of the broadcast I was in the studio. I watched it from a room - I wasn’t with the players. Mickey Rooney was friendly and nice. I can’t remember if Alec was there. Even if he was, he always pretended he wasn’t. They had never done it live before, and it had to be perfect because you couldn’t edit like you can today. There were a number of rehearsals of which I attended a few.
“It might have been a more pleasant experience were it not for the 'producer' [and scriptwriter], a terrible guy named Yasha Frank who resented us because he wanted to do it all himself. He’d been successful with Pinocchio in WPA days. The real producer was David Susskind of Talent Associates. He was a nice guy. He liked us. He also hired us for Hansel and Gretel [broadcast in April of 1958].
"I worked on Pinocchio from July to September. The Lullaby was something Alec and I had written a while before called Simple As ABC. I thought it would work in the show, suggested it and changed the words. Alec wrote all the music very quickly. It takes me longer to write, so Alec took off for Rochester - or wherever - and left me alone with these monsters! I felt like I was doing all the work. Sometimes he’d never say where he was. I think it was a real weakness of his: he simply couldn’t be tied down to anything, or own anything. Except for books. Bookstore owners loved Alec. He bought loads of books and gave most of them away.
“After Hansel and Gretel, Alec and I decided not to do anymore. We were offered a third program [Hiawatha] but turned it down. The drug company [Rexall] that sponsored them pulled out. Yasha Frank killed himself shortly after that. Several years later his son called me for permission to produce Pinocchio again. I said that would be fine, but nothing came of it.
“That was a long time ago. It’s all part of a dream.”
A video or DVD of the Pinocchio broadcast has never been released commercially, although a kinescope copy of it exists at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts

"Once upon a time, there lived a naughty, concupiscent puppet whose only dream was to be a human in real life. Being the mischievous marionette he was, he knew that the only way to have his wish granted was to do good deeds. "I want to be a real boy", he muttered with his hands clasped tight as he went to bed every night. Then came one fine morning...
In his snug nightcap and colorful pyjamas, he climbed out of bed and slipped into his fluffy slippers. As he was doing his usual morning stretch in front of the bedroom mirror, he suddenly felt a weird bulge growing between his legs. To his WOOD surprise, he realised that his biggest fantasy was finally coming true. He grinned to himself and lived happily ever after, as a human boy.

Looking just like a real boy, fully articulated Pinocchio is a Maggie doll made of vinyl. He features a new face stencil, blue eyes and a brunette boy cut. Everyone's favorite living puppet is dressed in a yellow cotton shirt with a blue bowtie, along with red flock shorts and suspenders. Over his shirt, he wears a black felt vest trimmed with gold braid. Brown Mary Janes, white gloves and a yellow felt hat, with a blue band and donkey ears, are great accessories - And his molded tail is the perfect final touch!
As the beloved song says, this puppet hasn't got any strings to hold him up, but with articulated elbows and knees, you can pose Pinocchio in endless fun positions!
A 2013 Spring edition from Madame Alexander's Disney Collection.
Suitable for ages 14 and up.
The original suggested retail was $104.96.
Lyrics from "Pinocchio"
Music and lyrics by Leigh Harline and Ned Washington
I've got no strings
To hold me down
To make me fret, or make me frown
I had strings
But now I'm free
There are no strings on me.
8-inch fully-articulated Pinochio, a Maggie with a new face stencil, blue eyes and a brunette boy cut, looks like a real boy. He’s dressed in a yellow cotton shirt, with a blue bow, and red flock shorts and suspenders that are accented with yellow buttons. The vest, worn over his shirt, is black felt trimmed with gold braid. Brown Mary Jane’s, white gloves with black details and a yellow felt hat with a blue band and donkey ears, nearly completes Pinochio. The final touch is the tail on his backside. All the world's a stage for the little puppet-turned-performer, Pinocchio. Though bound for school with the best of intentions, Pinocchio finds the allure of the stage too strong to resist, and before he knows it, he's the star attraction in Stromboli's marvelous marionette show. The bright lights and thunderous applause are intoxicating to the neophyte actor, but little does Pinocchio realize that fame comes at a steep price. This character-authentic polystone mini-bust is designed by Patrick Romandy-Simmons and sculpted by Bruce Lau. Standing 6 tall and numbered and limited to 3,000 pieces, Pinocchio comes painted and ready to display.

Here is the New York Times obituary for Dick Jones. (1927-2014)

Mr. Jones was known as Dickie when, as an 11- and 12-year-old, he played the title role, the marionette who dreams of becoming a real boy, in “Pinocchio,” still recognized as one of the great animated features in movie history.

As noted on Ventriloquist Central:
There are some figure makers today that are throw backs to a time gone by and Conrad Hartz is one of those few. He still makes his figures using basswood and hand carves them just like the old makers.

Conrad Hartz hails from Beaufort, South Carolina, USA...

On Puppet Hub he identifies his Puppetry Hero as Bil Baird. He credits the motion picture Lili for initially inspiring him to practice puppetry, and to build puppets.
One only has to admire the craftmanship of his ventriloquial figures to see the artist's obvious affection for the work of Paul Winchell.
